Interview
Algerian football legend Rabah Madjer expressed profound sadness following the death of his former teammate and one of the greatest forwards in Algerian football history, Djamel Menad, who passed away at the age of 64 after a long battle with illness.
Madjer: "Djamel Menad will remain a legend of Algerian football!"
In statements reported by L'Équipe, Madjer paid tribute to the former Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie player, who passed away last Saturday, saying: “His departure broke me. Menad will forever remain one of the greatest forwards Algeria has ever known.”
He continued: “We shared the adventure of the 1990 African Cup of Nations in Algeria together. We stayed in the same room and had great camaraderie, even on the field. We showed such harmony during our first match against Nigeria, which we easily won. I believe I provided the decisive passes for the two goals he scored.”
Madjer concluded by emphasizing: “We won this competition with brilliance, delivering an exceptional performance. This title represents both our hard work and professionalism. I believe Menad was crowned the top scorer, while I was voted the best player of the tournament.”
The late Djamel Menad, an icon of Algerian football, played 79 international matches with the Greens, scoring 25 goals. During the 1990 CAN, he won the top scorer title by scoring 4 goals in 5 matches.
