Mercato: Nigerian Awaziem set to leave Nantes

Relegation to Ligue 2 has had serious consequences for Nantes. Unhappy with the automatic reduction in his salary, Chidozie Awaziem has reportedly decided to leave the Canaries.

According to L’Équipe, confirming information from Ouest-France, the Nigerian central defender is on the brink of joining Konyaspor. At 29, the Nigerian international, who boasts 40 caps and 2 goals, is expected to sign with the Turkish club until June 2028. The transfer fee is estimated at around one million euros. This move marks a return to familiar territory for Awaziem, who previously played in the Turkish league with Rizespor and Alanyaspor. Negotiations between Nantes and Konyaspor are reportedly at an advanced stage, according to French media.

A brief spell at La Jonelière

Returning in July 2025 from the Colorado Rapids to bolster Nantes’ back line, Awaziem spent just one season with the Canaries. An undisputed starter, he played 26 matches, starting 25 of them in Ligue 1 last season, scoring once and providing two assists.

But after relegation, the defender decided not to continue his journey along the banks of the Erdre. He is now set to turn the page after just 12 months.
