Messi names the greatest goal of his career! (Video)
At the summit of world football for two decades, Lionel Messi has rippled the net more than 800 times for club and country. Dazzling goals, masterful technical brilliance—yet when it came to picking the most significant goal of his storied career, the Argentine superstar left everyone stunned.
As part of the charitable initiative “A Goal in Life,” led by the Inter Miami CF Foundation, Messi was invited to select the goal that best symbolizes his career. And his choice wasn’t about technical wizardry or a solo wonder.
A header that became legendary
Indeed, Messi picked his headed goal in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United as his favorite.
Meeting a pinpoint cross from Xavi, the Argentine outjumped the English defense to score the second goal of the night at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. Seemingly simple, but profoundly symbolic, the goal sealed a remarkable season for Barça, capped off with a historic treble. Video:
"It might not be the most beautiful, but it’s the one I feel the most," Messi admits.
This iconic goal will soon be immortalized by artist Refik Anadol in a digital artwork, to be showcased and auctioned for charity.
