Morocco makes a winning start to the U20 AFCON!
Morocco kicked off their U20 AFCON campaign with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Kenya on Thursday in Cairo. Trailing early, the Atlas Cubs showed real grit to turn things around, with a decisive performance from Yassir Zabiri.
Despite a convincing start, Morocco conceded the opening goal in the 16th minute as Hassan Beja headed home with precision.
The Kenyans, dangerous from set pieces, continued to cause problems. However, Morocco responded by ramping up their attacks, coming close to equalizing on several occasions.
It was Zabiri who finally pulled Morocco level just before halftime, slotting home after a VAR check confirmed the goal (1-1).
The Lions secure their first three points
After the break, Zabiri struck again, capitalizing on a perfect cross from Maamma in the 55th minute. El Haddad then hit the post before Beja equalized for Kenya in the 71st minute. But Reda Laalaoui sealed the victory for Morocco in the 78th minute, firing home with a low shot after a scramble in the box. Video:
Late in the match, Maamma missed a penalty, but it didn't affect the outcome. Morocco picks up their first three points and will face Nigeria on Sunday. Kenya, meanwhile, will need to bounce back against Tunisia.
