Nigeria Eyes World Cup Boost as South Africa Faces Potential Points Deduction!
Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have taken dramatic twist following allegations that Group C leaders South Africa fielded ineligible player in their 2 - 0 victory over Lesotho.
If FIFA upholds Lesotho’s appeal Bafana Bafana could be docked points reshaping the qualification battle.
Mokoena Controversy Shakes Group C
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena played 82 minute against Lesotho despite reportedly accumulating 2 yellow card in previous qualifiers. Both the Lesotho football association LFA & Nigeria football federation NFF have lodged official complaints demanding FIFA take action.
In response South Africa withdrew Mokoena from their squad before their 2 -0 win over Benin where 2nd half goals from Lyle Foster & Jayden Adams sealed victory.
Chelle “We're Still in the Race”
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle addressed the situation cautiously but remained optimistic about Nigeria’s chances:
“I told my players to focus on 2nd place but if South Africa loses 3 point, we can pass them, We still have game against them and we'll see what happens” Chelle said.
Nigeria’s Qualification Hopes Hang in the Balance
Nigeria’s 2 - 2 draw with Zimbabwe after conceding late equalizer, dented their world cup hopes, leaving them fourth in Group C with 7 point, 6 behind South Africa.
If Bafana Bafana's penalized, the gap could shrink to 3 point reviving Nigeria’s hopes of qualification.
What’s Next?
If FIFA rules against South Africa, Lesotho could move up to nine points, while Bafana would drop to 10.
