Nottingham Forest: Taiwo Awoniyi undergoes emergency surgery
On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Nottingham Forest announced that their Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone emergency surgery following a serious abdominal injury sustained during last Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leicester City at the City Ground.
Last Sunday, during Matchday 36 of the Premier League, Nottingham Forest faced Leicester City at the City Ground. Coming on in the 83rd minute, Taiwo Awoniyi crashed violently into the post while trying to get on the end of an Anthony Elanga cross. Despite the heavy collision, the medical staff cleared the striker to continue, and he finished the match visibly limping.
The following day, thorough examinations revealed a serious abdominal injury, requiring urgent surgery. The club confirmed the operation but did not specify how long the player would be sidelined.
"Nottingham Forest announces that Taiwo Awoniyi is recovering well from a severe abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City, after undergoing emergency surgery," the club said in a statement.
The incident drew a strong reaction from club owner Evangelos Marinakis, who voiced his frustration over the medical staff’s handling of the injury. He emphasized the importance of player health and called for improved communication between the technical and medical teams.
