OM: Major setback in the Bennacer case
The loan of Ismaël Bennacer to Olympique de Marseille is coming to an end. Although the deal with AC Milan included a purchase option, the Phocaeans have ultimately decided not to trigger it.
Arriving during the offseason from AC Milan on a paid loan worth 1 million euros and an option to buy set at 12 million euros, Ismaël Bennacer quickly established himself as a key component of Marseille’s setup. Unfortunately, injuries and physical setbacks hampered the momentum of the 27-year-old midfielder, seeing his playing time dwindle as the season progressed.
As a result, the Marseille board chose not to activate the purchase option, as revealed by the Italian press on Monday. The Algerian international will therefore return to Italy, where he is expected to resume training with the Rossoneri on July 7. However, he could be on the move again very soon.
A new loan move to Marseille?
Rumors suggest that Olympique de Marseille are still keen on the player and would like to bring him back, but only on another loan deal. This idea does not appeal to the Milanese side, who are looking for a permanent transfer. Nevertheless, negotiations remain open between the two clubs, who will decide on the terms of any potential new deal.
AC Milan recently appointed Massimiliano Allegri as head coach and Igli Tare as sporting director. A meeting is reportedly scheduled between the three men to determine Bennacer’s future within the Milan squad.
