Pirates Look to Bounce Back and Set the Tone Before Soweto Derby

After their CAF Champions League heartbreak, Orlando Pirates return to the domestic front determined to revive their title challenge when they host Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium tonight.
The Buccaneers currently second with 46 point from 20 game, trail leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 9 point but crucially hold 2 games in hand.
Victory against third placed Sekhukhune would narrow that gap and inject confidence ahead of Saturday’s massive Soweto Derby clash against Kaizer Chiefs.
However Babina Noko, guided by former Pirates coach Eric Tinkler, aren't in town to roll over. With 41 points from 24 games they sit just 5 point behind Pirates and are in the hunt for continental spot.
Tinkler still stung by their 1 - 1 draw against TS Galaxy views this fixture as must win.
Pirates form at home has been solid , 7 wins, three draws and just one loss , while defensively, they remain one of the stingiest sides in the league with only 14 goals conceded.
Young winger Mohau Nkota, fresh from scoring in the CAF semifinal, will be vital in attack while midfield generals Makhehleni Makhaula and Thalente Mbatha are expected to control the tempo.
Sekhukhune, meanwhile will lean on Chibuike Ohizu for goals and Sphesihle Mkhize and Sipho Mbule to disrupt Pirates rhythm.
With coach Jose Riveiro set to leave at the end of the season, he remains optimistic:
“We’re disappointed, yes but this young squad is the future of the club. The potential is huge”
Wednesday’s showdown carries CAF qualification stakes, league title implications and sets the tone for defining week in the Buccaneers season.
