Real Madrid: José Mourinho cools enthusiasm around Arda Güler
Despite his influence and his free kick at Elche, Arda Güler enjoys no privileged status in José Mourinho’s eyes.
Arda Güler is playing an increasingly important role in Real Madrid’s game, but José Mourinho refuses to portray him as indispensable. Asked after Tuesday’s spectacular victory away to Elche (3-2), the Portuguese coach replied bluntly: “No, nobody is indispensable.”
Arda Güler decisive for 67 minutes at Elche
Starting in the number 10 role, the Turkish international found the net with a magnificent free kick in the 23rd minute. However, the goal was officially recorded as an own goal by goalkeeper Matías Dituro, who was touched by the ball before it entered the net. Replaced after 67 minutes with Madrid still leading 2-0, Güler was beginning to lose intensity, according to his coach.
“Arda, who played in this number 10 position, was also beginning to lose intensity,” Mourinho explained. That change does not detract from his performance: the 21-year-old left-footer delivered three key passes, completed three dribbles and had a 96.2% passing accuracy. In six La Liga appearances this season, four of them as a starter, he now has 295 minutes, one goal and two assists.
Mourinho wants to preserve competition at Real Madrid
Güler’s substitution was part of an effort to regain control. “I brought on a fresh Jude and Brahim when we were leading 2-0, but I felt we were starting to lose control,” the coach continued. Elche nevertheless equalised before Carlos Espí gave the Madrid side the win in stoppage time. “Then we brought out the big guns and managed to get through it.”
Mourinho’s message therefore appears primarily intended to protect the balance of his dressing room. Güler is emerging as Madrid’s main creator, but remains subject to competition from Jude Bellingham and Brahim Díaz. Already named among the five best Madrid players of August, the Turkish player is gradually turning his talent into consistency, without yet receiving preferential treatment.
