Real Madrid: Modrić and Vázquez extend... but only for 14 days!

Real Madrid is set to keep two of its most seasoned players in the squad for the upcoming Club World Cup, scheduled from June 15 to July 13, 2025, in the United States.

According to Spanish daily AS, the club is planning to temporarily extend the contracts of Luka Modrić and Lucas Vázquez until July 13, solely to allow them to compete in the global tournament under its new format.

An exceptional 14-day extension

Again according to AS, this extension will last just 14 days, made possible by a special exemption granted by FIFA. This allows participating clubs to retain certain players whose contracts expire at the end of June, enabling them to play through to the end of the tournament.

Real Madrid is also grappling with a wave of injuries that has severely affected its squad. Among the absentees are Ferland Mendy, David Alaba, Eduardo Camavinga, Antonio Rüdiger, Dani Carvajal, and Éder Militão.

The draw, held last December 5 in Miami, placed Real Madrid in Group H alongside Pachuca (Mexico), Red Bull Salzburg (Austria), and Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia).
