Richard Koné: everything to know about the League One's best player
On April 27, 2025, Richard Koné was crowned Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season in League One at the EFL Awards in London, following an exceptional season with Wycombe Wanderers. With 18 goals, the Ivorian striker also finished the 2024/2025 campaign as the top African scorer in the English third division.
Humble beginnings, an extraordinary journey
Born on July 15, 2003, in Abidjan, Richard Koné has had an unusual path. He arrived in the UK in 2019 to participate in the Homeless World Cup, a turning point in his personal and sporting life. After a period of wandering, he found refuge in semi-professional football with Athletic Newham. Between the Eastern Counties League and Essex Senior League, the Ivorian player scored 125 goals in 148 matches from 2019 to 2024. During this time, he had a trial period with Wycombe Wanderers in the summer of 2023. This fruitful experience led to a professional contract.
The breakthrough at Wycombe Wanderers
In January 2024, Richard Koné joined Wycombe Wanderers, a League One club. His impact was immediate: scoring on his debut in the EFL Trophy against West Ham U21 on January 9, 2024, followed by a perfect hat-trick in nine minutes against Peterborough United, setting a club record. On January 13, 2024, he played his first match in the English third division against Lincoln City. He played only 8 minutes but marked this debut with a goal, the only one for his team in this duel. During the 2023/2024 campaign, he scored 3 goals and provided 2 assists in 17 appearances.
2024-2025: The unprecedented season of Richard Koné
In November 2024, he extended his contract after rejecting a €6 million offer from Luton Town. More convinced than ever of his talent, the Ivorian unleashed his potential. During the 2024-2025 season, he scored 21 goals across all competitions, including 18 in the league, and provided 5 assists.
He became the top African scorer in League One and the 3rd in the league's top scorer ranking behind Charlie Kelman (21 goals) and Jay Stansfield (19 goals). At the EFL Awards, he was named Player of the Season 2024/2025 in League One and Young Player of the Season.
