Samuel Eto'o's birthday: the extraordinary journey of an African king
Exclusive
On March 10, 1981, the small locality of Nkon (Cameroon) witnessed the birth of a young Lion. He knew he was indomitable, being Cameroonian. Moreover, his name was Samuel Eto'o.
At 14, the young feline already had grand visions. He decided to leave his native Cameroon for broader horizons. He knew his preferred hunting grounds would be the heated arenas of Spain and Italy.
Challenging beginnings
After a brief stint in Ivory Coast, Samuel Eto'o set off to conquer Europe. He arrived in France dreaming of joining PSG's Training Center. It was a failure.
Without papers, he was turned away. Nonetheless, the Cameroonian prodigy did not despair and laced up his boots again to hone his skills at the Kadji Sports Academy in Douala. The young hopeful was quickly spotted and given the chance to try out at Le Havre, Saint-Etienne, and Cannes.
Again, it was a failure, but no matter, Madrid was within the young Lion's "claw" who always believed that "football was a powerful language that transcended borders."

Back in his native Cameroon, the young Lion remained vigilant. The formidable Madrid talent scout Pirri spotted him and sensed a great opportunity, offering him a trial. Eto'o once again set out to conquer a Europe that had long eluded him.
Real Madrid: a turbulent passage
Eto'o is among those great champions who struggle with tests, much like a certain Michel Platini. Nevertheless, the young striker managed to impress Real Madrid's scouting team.
At just 15, he signed his first professional contract with the prestigious Spanish club and played his first season in the Segunda with "La Castilla" (Real's B team).
In the 1997/1998 season, Eto'o was loaned to Leganes (D2) to toughen up the young prodigy. He played 30 matches but scored only 4 goals. However, he was called up to the national team and participated in his first World Cup.
Back at Real, he played only one match during the 98/99 season, which allowed him to win the first trophy of a long series: the Intercontinental Cup. He was then loaned for 6 months to Espanyol Barcelona without playing a single match.
Returning to Madrid for the 1999/2000 season, he never managed to compete with strikers like Raul and Morientes. No goals in 6 matches played.
His international experience was enriched by a Champions League match on 21-9-1999 and participation in the Club World Cup in January 2000.
Majorca (2000-2004) - The real beginnings of a great champion
In January 2000, Eto'o was transferred to Majorca on loan with an option to buy. This loan would prove pivotal in the young prodigy's career.
Eto'o was more prolific in the Balearics, scoring 6 goals in 11 matches. Impressed, Majorca's management activated the purchase option, paying 7 million euros for the jewel.
In the national team, it was a triumph: an African championship title, 4 goals, and, no less, the gold medal at the Sydney Olympics adorned with a goal by Eto'o.

Over four seasons, he progressively flourished at Mallorca, scoring 13, 10, 19, and then 27 goals, respectively. His extraordinary performances propelled his team to 3rd place in La Liga, earning them a first Champions League appearance in the 2001/2002 season.
In 2003, the exploits of the Lions' "serial scorer" gave Mallorca its most beautiful title: the Copa del Rey.
In the same year, the "Indomitable Lions," led by a superb Samuel Eto'o, claimed the African crown for the second consecutive time.
In 2004, he left the Balearics as the top scorer in the club's history!
International acclaim - FC Barcelona (2004/2009)
Newly elected Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was reluctant to transfer Samuel Eto'o from Mallorca to Barça, the eternal rivals of the "Merengue." But after tough negotiations, FC Barcelona managed to secure the Cameroonian gem for a handsome sum of 24 million euros. He signed for five seasons. In Catalonia, Eto'o would reach new heights.
He quickly became a starter alongside Giuly and Ronaldinho. In his first season, he dazzled the scoreboard with 29 goals and won the Spanish championship.
In front of 100,000 spectators celebrating the title at Camp Nou, Eto'o criticized his former club, Real Madrid. This attitude drew harsh criticism from the Spanish media.
In the 2005/2006 season, Eto'o, at the peak of his form, was a true powerhouse. As the spearhead of the Blaugrana team, he swept everything in his path: Spanish championship, Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, and a "Pichichi" title fell into his lap. Eto'o thus became the immovable keystone of a conquering Barcelona team. Even the arrival of a budding Messi at Barça went unnoticed that year.

However, Eto'o experienced his greatest disappointment in the national team as Cameroon, to everyone's surprise, missed qualification for the 2006 German World Cup and the African Cup of Nations.
The 2007/2008 season was less brilliant for Barça, which finished 3rd in the championship. Repeated injuries suffered by Eto'o seemed to have stalled the Blaugrana machine.
The atmosphere was no longer harmonious within the group. Having played only 19 matches, Eto'o nevertheless scored 11 times.
The 2007/2008 season promised better prospects for Barça. With Thierry Henry's arrival, the "Aficionados" shivered at the thought of seeing the quartet: Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Messi, and Henry play together.
But Eto'o was once again the victim of a serious injury during a friendly match at the start of the season. This setback did not prevent the Indomitable Lion from participating in the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana and fulfilling his contract.
Within a Blaugrana group undergoing transformation and with Messi's emergence, Barça won no trophies despite Eto'o's 16 goals in just 18 matches played.
Summer 2008: a major clean-up at Barcelona. Rijkaard was dismissed, along with Ronaldinho and Deco. Guardiola took the helm of the Catalan machine. Eto'o was favored by the new coach.
The famous Catalan strategist was right. The fearsome Cameroonian striker, more impressive than ever, achieved a true feat by winning a historic sextuple with Barça: Spanish Championship, Cup and Super Cup, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup, with 30 goals in 36 league matches to his credit.
200 matches, 152 goals in all competitions, such is the fantastic record of the now best African scorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League with FC Barcelona.
The "socios" who elected him "the best number 9 in the club's history" will regret his departure for Inter Milan.
The call of lombardy (2009-2011)
Tired of the Catalan maritime breeze, our "Indomitable Lion" decided to savor the pure air of the Lombard heights. The 10.5 million euros salary offered by Inter Milan's president, Massimo Moratti, certainly convinced him to settle in Milan for three seasons (2009-2011).
Under the guidance of the "Special One" Mourinho, Eto'o was forced to play on the left side of the attack in favor of Milito at the point. Although he scored fewer goals, the name of the formidable Cameroonian striker will forever be linked to the historic quintuple won by the Nerazzurri in 2010: Scudetto, Italian Cup, Super Cup, Champions League, and finally Club World Cup.
Eto'o became the only footballer in history to have won two consecutive national triples in two different leagues (Spain and Italy)!

The annals of the sport will remember that the legendary Cameroonian entered the very exclusive circle of players who won two consecutive Champions Leagues with two different teams.
The following season, new coach Benitez, then coach Leonardo, repositioned Eto'o at the forefront of the attack. "Il Re Leone" (The Lion King), as he is affectionately known in Italy, scored 37 goals with the Nerazzurri, who consoled themselves that year with an Italian Cup won at the expense of Palermo (3-1) thanks to a double by Eto'o.
Eto'o, the globe-trotter
From journey to journey, Eto'o went on to showcase his talent in all corners of the world. During the 2011-2012 season, he played in the Russian league for the wealthy Anzhi Makhachkala, earning 20.5 million euros per year.
The following season, he stayed with the same club and reached the Russian Cup final for the first time. Eto'o was voted the best player in the league.
Summer 2013, he left Russia to land in London, signing a lucrative contract with Chelsea (8 million euros). He scored 12 goals in 35 appearances, but his stint in the English capital lasted only one season. His new destination in the "Kingdom of Her Majesty" was Everton, where he did not stay long.
In January 2015, Eto'o opted for Sampdoria in Genoa. For a few months. From June 2015 to August 2018, Eto'o settled in Turkey, showcasing his talent at Antalyaspor, where he became the club's all-time top scorer with 44 goals. Eto'o also had a brief stint at Konyaspor, Antalyaspor's great rival.
Samuel Eto'o's long journey led the Cameroonian genius to Doha, where he concluded an extraordinary career in September 2019 at Qatar Sports Club.
Two years later, "the Great 9" took a big leap! He swapped his boots for an executive suit, taking the helm of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT). With the slogan "restore Cameroonian football to its greatness," Samuel Eto'o harbors immense ambitions to develop the king of sports in his native country. Call him "President Eto'o"!
