Senegal Stun England with Historic 3-1 Comeback Victory
Senegal made history on Tuesday night defeating England 3 - 1 in friendly that marked the Three Lions first ever loss to African team. The match held at City Ground in Nottingham, was part of both teams buildup to the 2026 World cup qualifiers.
Bright Start Fades for England
England struck early through Harry Kane who finished calmly in the 7 minute to put the Euro 2024 runners up ahead. But that would be their only bright moment.
Senegal responded strongly. Just before half time, Ismaila Sarr equalised in the 40 minute, capitalising on defensive lapse to level the score at 1 - 1.
Senegal Take Over
The 2nd half belonged entirely to the visitors. Habib Diarra fired Senegal ahead in the 62 minute and Cheikh Sabaly sealed the win with 3rd goal deep into stoppage time 90+3 , sparking wild celebrations among the visiting supporters.
To Tuchel's Disappointment
The result marked the first defeat for Thomas Tuchel as England manager having taken over from Gareth Southgate earlier in 2025. It’s also the 1st loss to African opponent in England’s history according to ESPN.
Next Steps in World Cup Path
England now turn focus to upcoming qualifiers against Andorra & Serbia on 6 Sep & 9. Meanwhile Senegal prepare to host Sudan before visiting DR Congo in their African qualifiers on 1 Sep & 9.
