Serge Obassa Nigerian champion: "We worked hard for this title"
Exclusive
Beninese goalkeeper Serge Obassa has just clinched the Nigerian Premier League title with his club, Remo Stars. In his debut season abroad, the former Benin league champion with Buffles du Borgou truly shined, racking up 15 clean sheets. In this exclusive interview, he talks to us about this remarkable campaign, his adaptation, and what's next for him.
Serge, congratulations on this title with Remo Stars. What made it possible for you to become champions?
Thank you so much! This success is the result of hard work. We train in excellent conditions here. The facilities are modern, the staff is professional, and above all, the team is united. Everyone plays for the group. When I arrived, I could feel that the ambitions here were sky-high. What we're experiencing now is the result of all that.
You kept 15 clean sheets this season. How did you adapt to football in Nigeria?
It wasn't easy at first, since it was my first season abroad. But I was welcomed very warmly. The staff trusted me from the start. My teammates supported me, especially the other goalkeepers. There’s no jealousy between us, we push each other. That's what helped me settle in and perform well. And the clean sheets, that's thanks to the whole team, not just me.
Your contract is coming to an end. Have you had any offers? Do you want to stay?
Yes, I have some offers here and also from elsewhere. There’s still a bit of time left on my contract. I’ll take time to think it over carefully, with my family. I’m happy at Remo Stars. What I can say is that I feel good here. Of course, I need to see what’s best for my development.
Do you want to discover another league or continue in Nigeria?
Honestly, it’s still too early to decide. And to be frank, I’m not projecting that far ahead yet. We've just won a historic title for Remo Stars and the region. That’s no small feat. You have to enjoy these moments. That’s important. After that, I’ll take the time to assess things, to see where I can keep progressing. Nigeria is a very competitive league, but if there are opportunities elsewhere that match my ambitions, why not? The most important thing is to keep learning and moving forward.
