South Africa Gears Up for Crucial Clash Against Lesotho in World Cup Qualifiers
The South African national team is set to take on Lesotho in the fifth round of the CAF qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, as part of Group C. Currently, Benin leads the group with 8 points from five matches, making every game crucial for South Africa's chances of advancing.
Coach Broos Warns Against Underestimating Lesotho
Belgian coach Hugo Broos has emphasized the importance of not underestimating Lesotho, highlighting the unpredictable nature of African football. He pointed out that victories are never guaranteed, especially in regional derbies.
“In Africa, it’s a common theme that you can never be certain of a win before the match begins,” Broos stated. “We saw that yesterday with Cameroon drawing 0-0 against Eswatini. Tomorrow, we face an opponent we cannot take lightly. Lesotho recently held their own against Morocco, only losing 1-0 in the 93rd minute. They also managed a 0-0 draw against Nigeria over a year ago. This shows we’re up against a tough challenge.”
Confidence in South Africa’s Strengths
Despite the challenges, Broos expressed confidence in his team’s abilities, reflecting on their impressive performances over the past year. “Last year was historic for us,” he said. “We won a bronze medal and secured qualification for the next AFCON. But that’s all in the past now. We can’t rely on other teams to do us favors. We have to take control of our destiny, starting with tomorrow’s match.”
A Battle for Every Ball
Broos also warned that the game against Lesotho won’t be straightforward. “It’s crucial that we stick to our game plan. The match won’t be easy from the start. If we’re lucky, we might score early and change the dynamics, but I don’t expect it to be that simple. Lesotho is a team that fights for every meter and every ball. We need to be ready for a tough battle.”
As South Africa prepares for this critical encounter, the focus is on maintaining discipline, leveraging their strengths, and securing a vital win to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
