Spanish Court Sends Strong Message with Jail Sentences Over Racist Attack on Vinicius Junior
A Spanish court's sentenced 4 men to prison and imposed strict sanctions after finding them guilty of hate crimes and threats against Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior in case that shocked football fans globally.
A Disturbing Act Before Madrid Derby
In the early hours of 26 January 2023 ahead of the Copa del Rey clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, the convicts hung black mannequin wearing Vinicius jersey from bridge in mock lynching scene.
The act widely condemned as racist and threatening prompted La liga to file legal complaint. It was deemed clear incitement to hatred and attack on the player's dignity.
Sentencing Details - Jail, Fines & Match Bans
According to Marca the Madrid High Court handed down the following penalties:
- Main perpetrator:
- 15 month in prison for hate crime
- 7 month for issuing threats
- 1,084 Euro fine
- Additional penalty for sharing photos of the act online which amplified its impact
- Three accomplices:
- Each sentenced to 7 month for hate crime + 7 month for threats
- 720 Euro fine per person
- All 4 received strict additional measures:
- Banned from approaching Vinicius Junior, his home or Real Madrid facilities within 1000 meters
- Barred from entering any football stadium in Spain for 4 year including before and after matches
Apology Not Enough to Avoid Punishment
Though the men admitted guilt and issued written apology to Vinicius, Real Madrid, la liga and the Spanish FA, the court proceeded with sentencing. The apology was considered mitigating factor but didn't spare them from prison.
