Steve Barker guided Simba SC to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Coastal Union in the NBC Tanzania Premier League on Thursday evening.

The Reds of Msimbazi were given a run for their money and forced to dig deep on home soil as they went into the halftime break level with the visitors.

Simba, however, eventually found the breakthrough as former Stellenbosch FC defender Ismaila Olivier Toure opened the scoring in the 75th minute.

Barker's men held on for maximum points at home, and returned to the summit of the Tanzanian topflight standings with 12 points from the opening four outings.

Notably, the 22-time Tanzanian champions have an inferior goal difference to bitter rivals Young Africans, who are in action against Pamba Jiji on Friday.

Appointed in December 2025, the South African tactician has been tasked with toppling Yanga, and ending their run of five consecutive league titles.

The ex-Stellies boss is also expected to clinch domestic cup titles and mount a strong run in the coveted CAF Champions League.

Whether Barker will meet the objectives remains to be seen, with his troops set to welcome Geita Gold FC in their next game on Monday, 31 August.
