Sunderland AFC: Habib Diarra's first words as a Black Cat
Habib Diarra, Sunderland AFC’s latest signing, delivered his first words on July 11, 2025 at the Stadium of Light, just days after completing his transfer. The Senegalese player opened up about his excitement and ambitions with the English club.
The 21-year-old midfielder joined Sunderland AFC on July 1 from RC Strasbourg, signing a five-year contract. Former captain of the Strasbourg side, Habib Diarra has become the most expensive signing in the English club’s history. He arrived on Wearside this morning and took part in his very first training session with the Black Cats.
In his first interview with the club’s official website, Diarra expressed his delight at joining Sunderland. The Senegal international, who had previously only played in the French league, is set to experience the English Premier League with the newly-promoted Black Cats for the 2025/26 season.
"I am very happy to be here. I can’t wait to get out on the pitch and play in this stadium. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier. I am proud to represent Sunderland and I will give everything I have for this club. It’s incredible to be able to play in the Premier League. It’s the best league in the world and I hope we can achieve great things this season," said Habib Diarra.
The presence of French coach Régis Le Bris played a major role in Diarra’s decision, as he was drawn to his new manager’s clear vision and the opportunity to compete in a top-tier league. The Senegalese midfielder described himself as a player "who loves to attack and defend".
