This player refuses to join his national team
Montader Madjed has decided to decline his latest call-up to the Iraq national team. Called up for the upcoming camp, the Hammarby IF winger has chosen to stay in Sweden to continue his season. The 21-year-old describes a difficult situation, but does not wish to go into detail.
A complicated situation with Iraq
After representing Sweden’s youth teams, Montader Madjed chose to play for Iraq at international level. However, he was not included in the Iraqi squad for the last World Cup, held in North America. Called up again, the player has this time decided to turn down the invitation:
I’m in a difficult situation with Iraq, and not everything has been resolved yet. I have nothing to comment on at the moment. It’s a complicated situation.
Madjed did not wish to explain the reasons for his decision or confirm whether he was considering representing Iraq in the future.
Madjed wants to maintain his momentum at Hammarby
The winger currently prefers to focus all his attention on Hammarby, where he has become an important member of the squad. Since joining from Varbergs BoIS in the summer of 2022, he has scored 24 goals and provided 13 assists in 106 appearances. The player does not want discussions about the national team to disrupt the end of his season:
A lot has happened, and I’ve had a few problems with the Iraqi coach. I don’t want to disrupt my momentum here.
The Swedish club remains in the title race in the Allsvenskan. With three matches left in the league season, Hammarby are just three points behind leaders IK Sirius. Their next game is scheduled for Friday against IF Elfsborg. Madjed hopes to keep this run going and help his team finish the season in the best possible shape.
