U20 World Cup: the four pots revealed!

FIFA has announced that the draw for the 2025 U20 World Cup will take place this Thursday, May 29, starting at 22:00 GMT. The event will be held in Santiago, the Chilean capital, which will host the tournament from September 27 to October 19, 2025.

The 24 qualified nations have been divided into four pots based on their performances in the last five editions of the competition, as well as their results in continental tournaments.

Morocco in Pot 4, African champions dropped to Pot 3!

Despite reaching the final of the last U20 AFCON, Morocco finds itself in Pot 4. This decision is due to their limited appearances in recent U20 World Cups. Joining them in this pot are Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Paraguay, Cuba, and New Caledonia.

Nigeria, another African representative, has secured a spot in Pot 2 alongside France, Argentina, Mexico, Ukraine, and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, South Africa, the newly crowned U20 African champions, are placed in Pot 3 with Japan, Spain, Australia, Panama, and Norway.

The teams will be drawn into six groups of four. The top two from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the round of 16.

It’s worth recalling that the last African triumph in this competition dates back to 2009, when Ghana lifted the trophy.

Here are the four U20 World Cup draw pots:

  • Pot 1: Chile, Italy, United States, South Korea, Brazil, Colombia
  • Pot 2: New Zealand, France, Ukraine, Argentina, Nigeria, Mexico
  • Pot 3: Japan, Spain, South Africa, Australia, Panama, Norway
  • Pot 4: Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Paraguay, Egypt, Cuba, New Caledonia
