Barcelona moved another step toward retaining the La Liga title after a 2-0 win away to Getafe on Saturday 25 April ending a six year wait for victory at the Coliseum and tightening their grip on the top spot.

Breakthrough before the interval shifts control

For long stretches, Getafe made the game uncomfortable but Barcelona found the breakthrough at a crucial moment. Fermin Lopez struck in first-half stoppage time finishing a move that finally broke the hosts’ resistance just before the interval.

That goal changed the tone. Barcelona who had struggled to win at this ground since 2019, entered the second half with control and greater composure.

Rashford seals it as Barca stay on course

The visitors extended their lead in the 74 minute when Marcus Rashford added the second goal, effectively ending Getafe’s hopes of a comeback.

From there, Barcelona managed the game without major alarms securing a result that carries significant weight in the title race.

Title within reach

The win lifts Barcelona to 85 point opening an 11 point gap over Real Madrid who were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Betis on Friday 24 April.

With the domestic cup and Champions League no longer in play, La Liga is now the clear priority and the finish line is close. Barcelona need just six more points to secure their 29 league title.

Key fixtures ahead

Hansi Flick’s side will face Osasuna next before a decisive Clasico against Real Madrid, a match that could formally seal the title if results go their way.

Getafe remain on 44 point in sixth place missing a chance to strengthen their position in the European qualification race.
