The match at Moulay Hassan Stadium ended with Malawi defeating Egypt 3-1 and booking their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Despite being down to ten players from the 52nd minute, the Scorchers stood their ground and struck at the perfect moments. Meanwhile, the Pharaohs exit the tournament after suffering back-to-back defeats in their opening two games.

Perfect start for Malawi

Malawi took the lead before the end of the first half. Rose Kabzere opened the scoring in the 31st minute, finishing off a pass from Temwa Chawinga. Just before the halftime whistle, in the 45+1st minute, Faith Chinzimu doubled the advantage. 2-0 at the break, and Malawi were just 45 minutes away from the quarter-finals.

Ten versus eleven, but the threat remains

The match turned in the 52nd minute after Rose Alphandika of Malawi was sent off. Egypt gained a numerical advantage but failed to capitalize. Things got even worse for the Pharaohs in the 68th minute, when Temwa Chawinga punished them with a third goal, putting the game out of reach for good.

Consolation goal for Egypt

Egypt managed to salvage some pride in the 71st minute through Eman Hassan Abdel Rahim Kasel. 3-1. Despite their numerical superiority in the closing stages, the Pharaohs couldn’t find a way back into the match. Time was running out and their play was disjointed.

With a perfect six points from six after their 3-2 win over Nigeria, Malawi currently top Group C and have officially qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. As for Egypt, who lost 0-6 to Zambia and then 1-3 to Malawi, they bow out of the tournament ahead of their final match against Nigeria, who will face Zambia.
