Senegal publicly displayed the Africa Cup of Nations trophy on Saturday 28 March 2026 at Stade de France in Paris before a friendly against Peru despite CAF officially awarding the title to Morocco earlier in the week.

Koulibaly leads symbolic celebration in Paris

Senegal’s players made a strong statement ahead of their international friendly against Peru as captain Kalidou Koulibaly carried the AFCON trophy onto the pitch during pre match ceremony.

The squad entered the field in full kit while Senegalese music icon Youssou N'Dour performed during a brief celebration.

Players then took part in a lap of honour passing the trophy among themselves in front of the crowd at Stade de France.

The gesture underlined Senegal’s stance as they continue to consider themselves rightful champions despite recent developments off the pitch.

CAF decision sparks major controversy

Earlier in the week, the Confederation of African Football CAF Appeals Committee ruled to strip Senegal of the AFCON title they had won on 18 January 2026 following 1-0 victory in the final.

The title was instead awarded to Morocco national football team, the host nation after a review of incidents that occurred during the final match between the two sides.

Senegal take case to CAS

Senegal have not accepted the ruling and have already taken legal action. The case has been submitted to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with the Swiss-based body confirming that official appeal has been filed.

The outcome of the appeal could have significant implications for the final status of the tournament as Senegal push to overturn the CAF decision and reclaim the title through legal channels.
