What is the main reason behind the sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli?
In the past few years, Manchester United has made a lot of mistakes that have made it the way it is now, for sure, administrative mistakes and technical failures at the team level have made the team one of the worst teams in the English league, regardless of some impulses of hope that it was offering.
All of Manchester United's previous signings have been underwhelming, including Rossmus Hoyland, Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount. So at the moment, it's unclear what the issue is at Manchester United.
The mistake of letting important players go!
Manchester United’s recent transfer decisions have left fans questioning the club’s judgment—particularly when it comes to letting key players walk away.
One of the most controversial moves was allowing David de Gea to depart as a free agent. Supporters have been vocal about their dissatisfaction, with many claiming that replacement Andre Onana has failed to fill the Spanish goalkeeper’s shoes.
But perhaps an even bigger blunder was the sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli in 2024. The Scottish midfielder was offloaded for a mere £25 million at the start of the 2024/25 season—a decision that now looks like a major misstep. McTominay has since thrived in Serie A, playing a pivotal role in Napoli’s title-winning campaign with 16 goal contributions. His standout performances have only magnified United’s mistake, turning what seemed like a decent sale into what now appears to be a bargain for Napoli.
Why Scott McTominay is being sold from Manchester United!
Despite being one of Manchester United's most important players over the years since making his Manchester United debut in 2017 under former Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho, the Scot was sold in 2024 for the modest sum of £25 million.
Speaking about having to sell the player due to Financial Fair Play rules, former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said: “I didn’t want this but that’s the rules the club had to deal with. The rules are, I would even say, bad, but that’s the situation created. It forced us to make this decision. He was so important for our team, he was at Manchester United for over 22 years. But unfortunately, it’s the rules. You have to discuss the rules to do sales and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value. It’s not the right thing to do but for everyone, for all parts, it’s a good deal. For Scott, he is happy with it. Of course, for Napoli, a very good player but also for us”.
