World Cup 2026: Adel Amrouche on the Brink of History?
Just a few days have passed since the Rwandan Football Federation officially announced the appointment of Algerian coach Adel Amrouche as the head of Rwanda's national team.
In a statement published on its official website, the federation declared:
“We are honored to announce to our supporters in general, and the football family in particular, the appointment of a new technical staff to lead our national team, under the direction of Algerian Adel Amrouche.”
The statement specifies that the new technical staff includes Éric Nshimiyimana as the main assistant and Caroline Brown as the doctor.
The contract signing ceremony, lasting two years, took place at the headquarters of the Rwandan Football Federation in the capital, Kigali.
Amrouche in Pursuit of a Historic Feat
The Algerian coach aims to achieve a flawless run in the next two World Cup 2026 qualifying matches against Nigeria and Lesotho, scheduled for the fifth and sixth rounds.
At 56, Amrouche is at a crossroads, with a unique opportunity to etch his name in football history. He could become the first Algerian coach to qualify an African team for the World Cup. Currently, Rwanda leads its group with 7 points, ahead of Benin and South Africa on goal difference. A double victory in the upcoming fixtures would solidify the "Wasps" position and bring them closer to a sensational achievement, in a group that includes two continental heavyweights: South Africa and Nigeria.
Rwanda will face Nigeria on March 21 before hosting Lesotho on the 24th of the same month.
