World Cup 2026: Alphonso Davies ruled out for Canada’s opening match
Canada will have to kick off their 2026 World Cup campaign without Alphonso Davies. The 25-year-old left-back is officially ruled out for the team’s first match, scheduled for this Friday against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Davies suffered a muscle injury during the Champions League semi-final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain and is still in recovery. Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed his absence, but remains optimistic for the rest of the tournament:
He will not be available tomorrow. The MRI showed very positive signs, he is recovering very well. But he is not at 100% yet. Having his dedicated personal physiotherapist here is extremely beneficial, and every day he focuses on what his body needs.
According to the medical staff, Davies could rejoin the squad as soon as the next group matches, notably against Qatar on June 19, and at the latest against Switzerland on June 24. Despite this blow for the tournament opener, Canada hopes to quickly have one of their key players back for the rest of their campaign.
