World Cup 2026: Emerse Faé Announces His Ambitions
As the 5th and 6th rounds of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers approach, Ivory Coast is preparing diligently. Head coach Emerse Faé has unveiled his squad and justified his selections, notably the significant returns of Sébastien Haller and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, as well as the surprising absences of Seko Fofana and Wilfried Zaha.
A Clear Goal: Six Points to Secure
During the usual press conference held on Monday, March 10, Faé stated his ambitions: to secure six points against Burundi and Gambia to keep Ivory Coast at the top of the group:
"We must take these six points and maintain a lead over Gabon," he declared, emphasizing the importance of this international break. Video:
The Anticipated Return of Haller and Gbamin
Among those recalled, the spearhead of the Elephants, Sébastien Haller, makes his much-awaited return. Having delivered strong performances, the former Borussia Dortmund star striker reclaims a prominent spot: "He scores, he plays regularly, he deserves his call-up," Faé noted.
Jean-Philippe Gbamin, on the other hand, is back in the squad thanks to his resurgence at FC Zürich. His role as a defensive midfielder meets a strategic need for the team.
Notable Absences
On the contrary, playmaker Seko Fofana, suffering from a muscle strain, is rested as a precaution: "He wasn't at 100%, it's better to avoid any risk," the coach explained.
The lively Wilfried Zaha, meanwhile, has not been called up, but Faé assures that the door remains open for the Ivorian winger.
With a competitive squad and clear ambitions, the Elephants are determined to strengthen their position on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
