World Cup 2026: new tension arises between FIFA and Iranian supporters

A fresh controversy is brewing around the 2026 World Cup. A civil liberties organization has taken legal action against FIFA to challenge the ban on the pre-revolutionary Iranian flag inside stadiums.

This flag, easily recognized by its lion and sun emblem, is deemed a political symbol by FIFA and is therefore prohibited in tournament venues, in line with its rules on competition neutrality. The complainants, however, argue that it represents a form of protected cultural and historical expression, and are demanding that supporters be allowed to freely display it during matches.

FIFA, for its part, is sticking to a strict policy aimed at preventing any political demonstrations in the stands to maintain the tournament's neutrality. The matter is now in the hands of the U.S. justice system, which will have to decide whether this ban aligns with the right to freedom of expression as argued by the plaintiffs.
