World Cup 2026 (Q): Togo and Mauritania draw
Togo and Mauritania ended in a spectacular draw (2-2) this Saturday, March 22, at the Kegué Stadium in Lomé, during the 5th day of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers. A result that compromises the qualification hopes of both teams.
The Sparrowhawks quickly took the lead thanks to Thibault Klidje, who opened the scoring with a diving header from a precise cross by Atte Youssifou (5th minute).
Struggling in the first half, the Mourabitounes, led for the first time by their new coach Aritz Lopez Garai, found it difficult to respond. Aboubakary Koita nearly leveled the score but saw his attempt hit the post.
Mauritania turns the tide
Returning from the locker room, Mauritania turned the tide in three frantic minutes. Koita first equalized with a superb curling shot (53rd minute) before Abdallahi Mahmoud gave his side the lead with a pinpoint pass from Sidi Bouna Amar (56th minute).
However, Togo's response was swift. Kevin Denkey equalized (70th minute) to secure a point for the Sparrowhawks.
Togo and Mauritania in a delicate position
This draw leaves both teams in a delicate position. Togo has 6 points, trailing behind the DRC, while Mauritania remains further back.
Their qualification hopes now rest on achieving feats in upcoming matches against Senegal and the DRC.
