World Cup 2026 qualifiers / Algeria – Uganda: a look back at their head-to-head history
Already qualified for the 2026 World Cup after their emphatic win over Somalia (3-0), the Algeria national team is gearing up for their final qualifiers match against Uganda at the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium in Tizi Ouzou. With 22 points on the board, Vladimir Petković's men are guaranteed to finish top of their group, regardless of this result. But for the Fennecs, the aim is clear: wrap up this campaign on a triumphant note and reaffirm their status as favorites.
The task, however, will be anything but easy. Uganda will throw everything into this decisive clash, as the “Cranes” can still dream of qualification if they manage to finish among the best runners-up. In other words, Algeria will have to stay focused to avoid any nasty surprises and prevent their opponents from spoiling the expected celebration in Tizi Ouzou.
Algeria holds a clear edge in the head-to-head history
Historically, encounters between the two nations have often swung in favor of the Fennecs. Since their first meeting in 1968, which Algeria won (4-0), the two sides have faced off on several occasions. Uganda enjoyed some success in the 1970s, notably on 27 May 1973 (2-1) and 28 June 1973 (2-0) in a friendly, as well as during the 1973 AFCON (2-1). Several draws followed: 1-1 on 11 November 1973, 12 November 1994, and 2 June 1995.
In the 1990s, Uganda came out on top twice more (2-1 on 2 and 4 October 1998), before Algeria regained the edge with a 2-0 victory on 20 June 1999. The early 2000s saw Algerian dominance with a 1-1 in 2002, then back-to-back wins (1-0 on 25 and 26 January 2003). The trend has only grown stronger in recent years: 2-0 in 2022, 2-1 in 2023, 2-1 in 2024, and 3-0 in 2025.
This historical superiority gives Algeria a clear psychological advantage heading into this latest showdown. But with both teams having very specific targets, caution will be the watchword. The Fennecs will need to draw on their experience to finish their qualifying campaign without a hitch and head into the 2025 AFCON brimming with confidence.
