Wydad AC: Rulani Mokwena to depart at the end of this season
Rulani Mokwena will close the chapter with Wydad AC at the end of the season, after an adventure as intense as it was controversial with the Casablanca club. The announcement puts an end to speculation about the future of the South African coach.
It is now confirmed. Rulani Mokwena will leave his position as head coach of Wydad Athletic Club at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season. The South African tactician, who arrived last January with a renewable six-month contract, will not extend his stay in the Moroccan metropolis. This information, confirmed by several sources close to the club, solidifies a short yet tumultuous relationship between the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach and one of Africa’s most decorated clubs.
In a recent statement, Steven Kapeluschnik, Rulani Mokwena's agent, shared the outcome of discussions with the club's president, Hicham Aït Mena.
"I clearly told the president: if you do not want Rulani to continue, say so. Otherwise, he stays until the end. Ultimately, we agreed on a professional and respectful departure at the end of the season," Kapeluschnik announced.
While Mokwena's appointment had sparked hope among WAC supporters, captivated by his pedigree and modern approach to the game, the reality on the pitch was more mixed. His sporting results did not advocate for an extension. In the league, the outcomes were inconsistent, with irregular performances preventing the club from climbing to the top of the standings. In the Champions League, the journey ended earlier than expected, a tough blow for a club accustomed to continental battles.
