Wydad Casablanca’s Club World Cup Journey: Aiming for History in 2025
Wydad Casablanca’s previous appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup didn’t leave major mark on the competition but 2025 presents whole new opportunity and challenge.
Modest History So Far
The Moroccan champions participated twice before:
- 2017 (UAE): Entered as CAF Champions league winners under coach Houcine Ammouta. Lost 1 - 0 to Pachuca (Mexico) in their opening game then fell 3 - 2 to Japan’s Urawa Reds in the 5th place playoff.
- 2023 (Morocco): As reigning African champions Wydad hosted and faced Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal. The match ended 1 - 1 before Wydad lost on penalties 5 - 3.
First Moroccan Club in the New 32-Team Format
In 2025 Wydad makes history as the first Moroccan club to take part in the newly expanded 32 team Club World cup , a landmark change introduced by fifa President Gianni Infantino. This format resembles the World cup for national teams increasing both the challenge and the exposure.
Group of Death Challenge
Now under coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem and bolstered by stars like Omar Al Soma & Nordin Amrabat, Wydad's been drawn into daunting group alongside Man City, Juventus and Al Ain.
Chance to Rewrite Their Legacy
With 2 underwhelming campaigns behind them, Wydad enters the 2025 edition with greater ambition and stronger squad. More than just competing, the Moroccan side's out to carve new legacy on the world stage where past disappointments could be replaced by historic triumphs.
