Zamalek Held to Goalless Draw by Modern Sport in Capital Cup Clash
Zamalek's hopes of advancing in the Capital Cup took major hit after goalless draw against Modern Sport on Sunday at Cairo International Stadium.
The result leaves Zamalek with 2 point from 3 matches in Group A placing them 4th under Portuguese coach José Peseiro. Modern Sport led by Algerian coach Abdelhak Benchikha, moved to 4 point in 3rd place.
Petrojet have already secured top spot with perfect 12 points while Gouna, also on 4 point, sit 2nd. The final round will see Zamalek face bottom placed Smouha on Apr 14 while Gouna take on Modern Sport in a decisive match.
Zamalek’s Narrow Qualification Chances
Zamalek now need 2 goal win over Smouha combined with draw between Gouna & Modern, to stand any chance of progressing to the quarter finals. In that scenario, goal difference will decide the 2nd qualifying spot.
The match saw early pressure from Modern Sport but Zamalek created several clear chances, notably through Mohamed Hamdy who was denied by goalkeeper Ahmed Yehia.
Despite late substitutions and last push in stoppage time both sides failed to find the breakthrough. Modern’s Ali Zezoua & Ahmed Ayman Mansour missed late opportunities while Zamalek’s attack lacked sharpness.
The draw leaves Zamalek’s fate hanging by thread ahead of do or die final group game against Smouha.
