Zidane clarifies his position: will he succeed Deschamps at the helm of Les Bleus?
Zinédine Zidane, former Real Madrid coach, has reaffirmed his desire to one day take charge of the French national team, stressing that his passion for the job remains as strong as ever.
Although he has been away from the pitch since leaving the Madrid club in the summer of 2021, "Zizou" has never ruled out a return to the bench. He still fully sees himself as a coach capable of making a difference.
In comments relayed by French outlet Foot Mercato, 52-year-old Zidane stated: "I've put my coaching career on hold, but I'm still a coach 100%. I've never lost the passion."
He continued: "I have a real desire to coach the French national team. I wore that shirt for a long time, and it's only natural to dream of such a role."
On the topic of Didier Deschamps, the current coach, he added: "Didier is still in charge, leading a very competitive team. You have to respect that. I've always respected football and those who work in it. When the time comes, I'll be ready."
A triple Champions League winner with Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018, Zidane remains one of the most decorated managers in the club’s history. This impressive track record makes him a serious candidate to eventually succeed Didier Deschamps.
