2026 World Cup - France: Ousmane Dembélé defends Mbappé and praises Messi
Just days before Les Bleus kick off their 2026 World Cup campaign, Ousmane Dembélé has come to the defense of Kylian Mbappé while also paying tribute to Lionel Messi.
There are silences that speak volumes, and statements that cut through the noise. Ousmane Dembélé chose the latter. Speaking to Marca during France’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup, the PSG forward firmly defended his captain Kylian Mbappé, who has been a frequent target of criticism in recent months.

"We've been very unfair to him. The criticism of Kylian has gone overboard because he's an incredible player. Sometimes people exaggerate just because it’s Kylian Mbappé. Whether he ties his laces, doesn’t tie them, pulls up his socks or not... it’s too much. He’s still a human being and an exceptionally talented player. Anyway, here with the French team, he gets along really well with us. He’s a leader, our captain, and a hugely important player," he insisted.

Powerful words that reflect the unity within the French squad. Dembélé also took the opportunity to pay tribute to another football legend—and France’s group stage rival—Lionel Messi.
"Can Messi win the World Cup again, even four years older? Of course. It changes nothing. He’s the best I’ve ever seen in football. He’s still dangerous. Even at 38, he’s so hard to stop. He’ll always have his qualities," Dembélé concluded, issuing a barely veiled warning.
