A Handshake and a Mega-Stadium: The Madrid-Morocco Tug-of-War for 2030

The Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid is currently the frontrunner to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup final, with football's governing body internally exploring a plan to stage the semi-finals in Casablanca and Barcelona according to Spanish sports daily Marca.

FIFA's venue distribution blueprint

The 2030 tournament will be co-hosted by Spain, Morocco and Portugal, alongside three opening centenary fixtures held in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. While intense public and media debate has emerged regarding which nation will secure the tournament’s crowning fixture, sources inside FIFA headquarters in Zurich indicate that the governing body currently leans towards selecting Real Madrid’s home ground for the final leaving the two semi-finals to Casablanca & Barcelona.

Despite this internal projection, FIFA has not officially ratified the venues. A formal determination is not expected in the immediate term and could remain open until 2027 or 2028 as technical assessments proceed.

The Bernabéu understanding and Madrid-FIFA relations

According to the report, Real Madrid previously reached what was described as an unwritten understanding with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, grounded in the view that the renovated Santiago Bernabéu represents the natural stage for the 2030 final.

When the joint Iberian-North African bid was formally constructed, the three host federations established a preliminary roadmap designating the Bernabéu as the final's venue.

Although institutional ties between Real Madrid and Infantino have cooled somewhat in recent months, the governing body has not abandoned its original preference for the Spanish capital, even if no binding contract has been signed.

Morocco's ambitions for the Hassan II stadium

The prospect of a Madrid final directly challenges the public expectations set by Moroccan football authorities. Spanish news agency EFE reported that Royal Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa reaffirmed his country's intentions during a political event in Bouznika.

"Benslimane province will have the honour of hosting the 2030 World Cup final" Lekjaa stated.

Benslimane, situated roughly 60 kilometres from Casablanca, is the construction site for the Grand Stade Hassan II.

The state of the art venue is designed with an expected capacity of 115,000 spectators which would make it the largest dedicated football stadium in the world upon completion.

Heritage against modern scale

The contest to stage the 2030 final represents a clash between established footballing pedigree and record breaking infrastructure. Madrid offers the Bernabéu’s proven operational history, central European media access and extensive urban transport connectivity.

In contrast, Morocco national team presents the Grand Stade Hassan II as a modern mega project capable of generating unprecedented matchday attendances. While Lekjaa’s firm stance highlights significant governmental backing in Rabat, FIFA’s historical conservative approach to stadium staging and Madrid's bid-phase priority ensure the Bernabéu remains in pole position.
