The relationship between Tolu Arokodare and Míchel Sánchez goes far beyond the usual relationship between a coach and his player. After Ajax’s 1-0 victory over AZ Alkmaar, the striker shared some insights into their close bond and the way the Spanish coach manages his squad.

A relationship that is difficult to explain

Recently asked about Míchel’s comments regarding his involvement in pressing, Arokodare took the opportunity to remind ESPN of the trust between them:

Believe me, you will never be able to understand the kind of relationship I have with the coach. And it is not just about me, but all the players.

The Nigerian describes an intense relationship, with exchanges that are sometimes very animated, particularly during tactical meetings:

There is an incredible dynamic, but not in a negative way. You would not even want to know what we do during meetings, with the match footage and everything else.

“He hates losing, but everything comes from love”

Arokodare acknowledges that his coach has a particularly strong personality. “He is a very passionate and emotional man who hates losing. But everything he does, he does out of love,” he said. The striker also says he is ready to take his coach’s comments on board in order to continue improving. “I am completely open to learning. It is this mindset that enables you to grow ,” he added.

Despite these high standards, exchanges within the squad are not always serious. Arokodare explained that Míchel also knows how to lighten the mood with a few unexpected comments. For the player, these light-hearted moments are essential to the balance of the team. “We cannot always be serious. You also have to know how to enjoy the moment,” he concluded.
