Al-Shamal outsmarts Al Ahly: Bounedjah used to sign Akram Tawfik!
Meshaal Al-Ali, president of the football division at Qatari club Al-Shamal, revealed in an exclusive interview with Al-Kass TV the inside story behind the negotiations with Cairo giants Al Ahly regarding Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah. He also unveiled an unexpected move that allowed his club to quietly secure the signing of Egyptian midfielder Akram Tawfik.
Speaking about Bounedjah, Meshaal Al-Ali said: "There was indeed an agreement between us and Al Ahly. A Qatari agent was tasked with handling the discussions. A representative from the Egyptian club came to meet the player, and all the details had been settled with him."
He continued: "At first, I suggested loaning the player, but ultimately, I felt that losing someone like Baghdad Bounedjah would be a significant blow for our team. So, we decided to call off the negotiations. The Al Ahly leadership acted professionally, and we welcomed them as they deserved."
He added: "An agreement had indeed been reached between Baghdad and Al Ahly, but we decided it would be too difficult to let him go. I personally contacted the player and told him: you gave up the chance to join a big club like Al Ahly, but you are a key part of our project at Al-Shamal. You could even become sporting director in the future."
A stealthy strategy to secure Akram Tawfik
The Al-Shamal president then revisited the details of Akram Tawfikâs recruitment, revealing that his club took advantage of the media spotlight on Bounedjah to get the deal done.
"War is all about strategy. Akram Tawfik was one of our top priorities, and the timing was perfect. While everyoneâs attention was fixed on Baghdad Bounedjah, we acted behind the scenes."
"I attended the meeting with the club president and Bounedjah to make it look like we were there to finalize the strikerâs transfer. But in reality, we were there for Akram Tawfik. It was a complete surprise, and everything was handled with maximum confidentiality."
The international midfielder has signed a three-year contract with Al-Shamal
"Akram is a fierce competitor. Heâs a massive boost for our squad. He could stay with us for the next ten years."
Finally, Meshaal Al-Ali concluded: "Akramâs contract with Al Ahly ends after their final league match. His deal with us includes several clauses, but we donât want any conflict with Al Ahly. We wish them the best of luck at the Club World Cup."
