Anthony Akumu on his way to AD Merida

Free since leaving Iranian club Kheybar Khorramabad FC, Anthony Akumu could be set for a new challenge in Spain.

According to Footy-Africa, the 32-year-old Kenyan defensive midfielder is close to signing with AD Merida, a club competing in Spain’s third division. Talks between the two parties have progressed in recent days, and a two-year contract is reportedly in the works. Only a few details remain to be settled, particularly regarding salary, before an official announcement expected later this week.

With 53 caps for the Harambee Stars and a well-traveled career across Africa (notably at Gor Mahia and Kaizer Chiefs) and Asia, Akumu could bring much-needed stability and leadership to AD Merida’s ambitious project.
