Augustin Senghor turns his back on his role as CAF 1st Vice-President
On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Augustin Senghor, president of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), announced his resignation from the position of first vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Augustin Senghor decided to throw in the towel after failing to be elected to the FIFA Council during the CAF General Assembly held earlier in the morning in Cairo. The Senegalese failed to secure the necessary votes to sit among the six African members representing CAF. In light of this setback, he felt it would be inconsistent and illegitimate to continue holding his position as the first vice-president of CAF.
"We must now wish them good luck. On our side, we will certainly face consequences. I still have two years left as a member of the CAF Executive Committee, as my term runs until 2027. Moreover, this argument was used to convince voters, telling them that if Senghor was not elected, he would still remain 1st vice-president, and therefore would have nothing to lose. In any case, the immediate consequence, in my view, is that in this situation, I do not see myself occupying the position of first vice-president," said Augustin Senghor.
