Ballon d’Or 2026: which nation dominates the 30-man shortlist?

Spain are the best-represented nation among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, narrowly ahead of France and Portugal.

Beyond the dominance of certain clubs, the final 2026 Ballon d’Or shortlist also underlines the strength of Spanish football. Fresh from winning the World Cup, Spain have six players among the 30 contenders: Ferran Torres, Fabián Ruiz, Rodri, Lamine Yamal, Marc Cucurella and Pau Cubarsi. Their strong presence reflects both their club performances and La Roja’s run to the world title.

The Spanish nominees are spread across several European giants. Ferran Torres and Fabián Ruiz now represent PSG, while Marc Cucurella plays for Real Madrid. Rodri, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi complete the Spanish contingent.

France and Portugal complete the top three

France sit just behind Spain with five nominees: Dayot Upamecano, William Saliba, Michael Olise, Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé. Upamecano and Olise both play for Bayern Munich. Portugal complete the podium with four representatives: Vitinha, João Neves, Nuno Mendes and Bruno Fernandes.

Brazil and England follow with three players each, while Argentina have two. Seven other nations have one nominee apiece, meaning 13 nationalities are represented overall. Spain’s dominance extends an exceptional year for La Roja, after Spanish football had already reinforced its supremacy following the World Cup triumph. The Ballon d’Or winner will be announced in London on October 26.
