Bencherki Dropped for Disciplinary Reasons in Club World Cup Opener
Al Ahly fans were left puzzled after Moroccan winger Achraf Bencherki was nowhere to be seen in the team’s opener against Inter Miami in the 2025 FIFA Club World cup , a match that ended in goalless draw.
While Bencherki wasn't injured, his absence raised questions until former Al Ahly star Islam El Shater provided clarity.
Disciplinary Action Over Squad Tensions
Speaking to MBC Masr El Shater revealed that Bencherki was excluded for disciplinary reasons following growing tension between him and head coach Jose Riveiro.
"Usually the coaching staff gives out colored bibs to indicate the starting lineup 2 or 3 days before match, Riberio gave the blue bibs to the starters but didn't give one to Bencherki which made the player visibly upset" El Shater said.
He added:
"Bencherki’s reaction showed clear frustration. His absence from even the warm up hints at deeper issues"
Call for Internal Resolution
El Shater warned that such tensions especially on the world stage, could hurt team unity. He urged Sporting Director Mohamed Youssef to step in quickly to contain the situation before it escalates.
Al Ahly’s next challenge comes against Palmeiras on 19 Jun followed by clash with Porto on 23 June , in Group A.
