Orlando Pirates rekindled their title aspirations in the Betway Premiership with crucial 1 - 0 victory over Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The win secured thanks to late goal reduces the gap to log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to 12 point with 3 games in hand.

Pirates' Coach Jose Riveiro on the Victory

After the match Pirates' coach Jose Riveiro acknowledged the tough conditions of the game but praised his team for their resilience and patience.

"It was always going to be ugly game because it was played on bumpy pitch. We'd to work hard for these three points. Teams run the extra mile when they play us but this team wants to win and they show it" Riveiro said.

Pirates Control Play Despite Early Pressure

The match began with an exciting back and 4th, as both teams sought early dominance. Within the 1st few minutes both goalkeepers were called into action. Polokwane's Brian Bwire made a key save from Oswin Appollis while Pirates' Sipho Chaine denied Appollis again from long range.

As the game progressed, Polokwane struggled to maintain their early intensity and Pirates began to control the match. Relebohile Mofokeng had golden opportunity in the 20 minute but missed the target after breaking through the defense.

Despite Polokwane's defensive efforts, Pirates' Patrick Maswanganyi showcased some flair to relieve the pressure. Towards the end of the first half, Polokwane launched a few counterattacks but Pirates' defense held firm.

The Winning Goal: Nkosinathi Sibisi Strikes

In the 2nd half, Pirates ramped up the pressure and their persistence paid off. In the 67 minute, Polokwane's Bwire fumbled free kick from Kabelo Dlamini and Nkosinathi Sibisi pounced on the loose ball to score from close range.

The goal seemed to energize Polokwane who pushed for an equalizer. However Pirates' defense led by Sibisi and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, held strong, stifling any further threat. Mofokeng had chance to seal the win late in injury time but dragged his shot wide though Pirates managed to hold on for vital victory.
