Breaking: Selection of Ghana's coach postponed to October 15!
Media outlets in Ghana and across Africa were stirred by news that came as a shock to some while making sense to others: the Ghana Football Association announced the postponement of the selection of a new head coach following the recent dismissal of Carlos Queiroz. This decision was reached in collaboration with the coaching search committee and in consultation with Ghana’s Ministry of Youth and Sports.
What is the main reason behind this extension?
According to Graphic Online, the Ghana Football Association has extended the selection process to ensure the best possible choice is made from among the candidates who applied for the position and possess the strongest credentials.
The committee wasted little time. After its first round of meetings and an early look at the situation, it came back with a clear message: finding the next Head Coach of the Black Stars should not be treated as a simple hiring task. Instead, the association explained, it ought to be seen as a chance to build something bigger — a stronger football identity, firmer performance standards, and a foundation solid enough to carry Ghana football into the future.
With that principle in mind, the committee called for a more carefully structured and thorough recruitment approach, one designed to make sure the eventual appointment serves the long-term interests of both the Black Stars and the wider game in Ghana.
A comprehensive assessment process involving those responsible for this file
As for the timeline, the work is far from finished. The committee proposed that evaluating, interviewing and narrowing down candidates should stretch across October and November 2026, with a final recommendation to follow only after that.
Such a pace, it argued, would leave room for a fair and merit-based process — one that allows for proper background checks, honest conversations with football stakeholders and technical experts, and a rigorous weighing of each candidate against agreed standards of technique, leadership, culture and performance. Above all, it would ensure that whoever takes the job arrives with both the ability and the vision the role demands.
