CAF General Assembly: six new members elected to the FIFA Council!
During the General Assembly of the African Football Confederation (CAF) held today, Wednesday, March 12, in Cairo, six members were elected to represent Africa on the FIFA Council. This election comes in a significant period of renewal for continental football.
The six elected, who will serve on the FIFA Council for the 2025-2029 term, are Hani Abou Rida (Egypt), Fawzi Lekjaa (Morocco), Ahmad Yahya (Mauritania), Knezat Ibrahim (Comoros), Gabriela Hima Hamidou (Niger), and Suleiman Hassan Waberi (Djibouti).

These elections saw broad support from the CAF General Assembly, which expressed its backing for the elected candidates, marking an important milestone for African football on the international stage.
The results of the FIFA Council elections are as follows:
- Fawzi Lekjaa (Morocco) – 49 votes
- Hani Abou Rida (Egypt) – 35 votes
- Gabriela Hima Hamidou (Niger) – 35 votes
- Knezat Ibrahim (Comoros) – 30 votes
- Ahmad Yahya (Mauritania) – 29 votes
- Suleiman Hassan Waberi (Djibouti) – 29 votes
- Amaju Melvin Pinnick (Nigeria) – 28 votes
- Andrew Ndanga Kamanga (Zambia) – 19 votes
- Yacine Idriss Diallo (Ivory Coast) – 18 votes
- Augustin Emmanuel Senghor (Senegal) – 13 votes
- Lydia Nsekera (Burundi) – 13 votes
- Aïcha Johannsen (Sierra Leone) – 7 votes
At the same time, the extraordinary General Assembly also re-elected Patrice Motsepe as CAF President for a new four-year term. The South African president, backed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, will continue to lead the governing body of African football until 2029.
