Carlos Queiroz will not continue his journey at the helm of the Black Stars. Following Ghana’s elimination in the round of 16, the former coach of several national teams has officially announced his departure. Appointed just two months before the 2026 World Cup in an emergency move, the Portuguese tactician was expected to lead the team to the quarter-finals.

Carlos Queiroz had signed a four-month contract with the Ghanaian national team last April, with an option to extend if the team reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Knocked out in the round of 16, the Black Stars failed to meet that goal, thus bringing this collaboration to an end.

In his farewell message, the 73-year-old coach said he was leaving Ghana “with pride,” believing that his team had “restored respect and credibility” for the Black Stars on the world stage.

A strong message for the future of Ghanaian football

Before leaving, Carlos Queiroz made a point of addressing Ghanaian football officials. According to him, the Black Stars’ future success will depend as much on organization as on performances on the pitch.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built solely on the pitch. Success must begin off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect, and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”

His contract will officially end on July 31, 2026, and will not be renewed.
