Ligue 1: Lionel Mpasi becomes Le Havre's number one goalkeeper
It’s now official. Lionel Mpasi will be the starting goalkeeper for Le Havre Athletic Club for the new Ligue 1 season. The Ciel et Marine’s head coach, Didier Digard, confirmed the news this Friday during a press conference.
The Congolese international goalkeeper has edged out Senegalese shot-stopper Mory Diaw. It’s a strong decision, based on Mpasi’s consistency and the leadership he’s shown in recent months.
Status earned on the international stage
The 32-year-old Leopard has reached a decisive milestone. After an exceptional World Cup campaign with DR Congo, he convinced the Normandy staff. In four high-level matches, he racked up saves: 8 stops against Colombia despite a narrow 1-0 defeat, then 5 more in the round of 16 against England. These performances erased any lingering doubts at Le Havre.
First start comes against Monaco
Mpasi will wear his new number one status for the first time this Sunday at Stade Océane, hosting AS Monaco. It’s a big clash to immediately assert his authority in the French top flight. The road has been long: after five years building his career in Ligue 2 with Rodez and just four Ligue 1 games last season, he finally steps onto the big stage. At 32, the Congolese keeper has earned his shot. Now it’s his time to shine.
