The iconic Casablanca Derby between Wydad & Raja took place on Saturday in front of nearly empty stands after both clubs' ultras groups successfully called for fan boycott in protest of increased restrictions imposed by authorities.

Despite 43000 tickets being made available, the stadium was strikingly quiet lacking the vibrant atmosphere and visual energy the derby is known for. The boycott was response to what fan groups described as tightened measures and limitations affecting matchday experiences.

An Unusual Mood in the City

In stark contrast to previous derby days, the streets surrounding Mohammed V Stadium were unusually subdued. Vendors typically selling merchandise from both clubs were noticeably absent signaling the lack of the usual pre match buzz and commercial activity.

Even with heightened security and early visit from Casablanca’s regional governor to oversee safety preparations, the fan presence remained minimal both inside and outside the stadium a rare scene for one of Africa’s fiercest football rivalries.

This muted edition of the Casablanca Derby reflects growing tensions between supporters & authorities and raises further questions about fan treatment & engagement in Moroccan football.
