Bryan Mbeumo made a successful start to life in the Champions League. On his very first appearance in the competition, the Cameroonian forward made a decisive contribution as Manchester United cruised to a 4-0 victory over Sabah FK, providing the assist for the Red Devils’ third goal.

Starting in his first European appearance for Manchester United, Mbeumo made his mark in the closing stages of the first half. Just before the break, the Cameroonian set up Šeško, who converted the opportunity to score United’s third goal. The assist capped an impressive Champions League debut for Mbeumo.

A performance that makes history

The assist also carries historical significance for Manchester United. It is the first Champions League goal contribution by an African player for the club since Quinton Fortune. The South African scored against FC Porto on 25 February 2004.

Twenty-two years later, Bryan Mbeumo has become the first African Manchester United player since Fortune to make a direct contribution to a Champions League goal.

The Cameroonian has also followed in the footsteps of Eric Djemba-Djemba. The former midfielder had been the last Cameroonian Manchester United player to make a direct contribution to a Champions League goal, doing so in 2003.

Already three goal contributions this season

Mbeumo’s European performance further underlines his strong start to the season. The Cameroonian had already scored twice in the league, finding the net in each of the last two matchdays.

His assist against Sabah FK takes his tally to three goal contributions this season. After four appearances in all competitions, the forward now has two goals and one assist.

For his first taste of European football with Manchester United, Bryan Mbeumo combined impact with history. A Champions League debut capped by an assist, further highlighting his growing influence at Old Trafford.
