Speaking to Marca, Lothar Matthäus urged the player to leave, warning he could miss out on next summer's World Cup. “If he wants to play at the World Cup, he has to leave. He knows he won't get game time at Barcelona, and he needs to move to play at the World Cup. These are decisions you have to accept and not complain about; it's part of football. It's not Hansi Flick, it's Barça, and nothing is bigger than the club. I understand Ter Stegen—he played well, he was captain, his private life is in Barcelona.
